November 2019 is an important month for vegans across the globe. Not only is it World Vegan Month, but this year is extra special as it coincides with The Vegan Society’s 75th anniversary. But what is World Vegan Month and how can you celebrate at Harriets?
What is World Vegan Month?
World Vegan Month is a celebration of the vegan diet and the vegan lifestyle. A way of living which excludes cruelty to all animals, vegans observe a plant-based diet, as well as avoiding products derived from animals, those tested on animals, or events where animals are exploited for entertainment.
Originally only World Vegan Day, the popularity of veganism has seen the day evolve into a whole month of celebrations. Today, every November, veganism is celebrated in homes, workplaces, shops and restaurants around the world.
Events such as vegan lunches in the office, or a vegan dinner party are held by companies and individuals to raise awareness of the movement. An ideal opportunity for non-vegans to try the vegan lifestyle, The Vegan Society encourage people to share recipes and ideas using the hashtag #WorldVeganMonth.
What are the benefits of a vegan diet?
Aside from the ethical benefits of going vegan, the plant-based diet also has a number of health benefits. Animal fats and proteins have been linked to a number of health problems, such as heart disease, cancers, diabetes and obesity, so removing these from your diet brings potential benefits.
Many British celebrities have embraced veganism, including actors, singers and sportspeople who believe this diet can prolong their professional careers. Famous vegans include Russell Brand, Benedict Cumberbatch, Nathalie Emmanuel, Ellie Goulding, Lewis Hamilton and David Haye.
